Scottish film star Alan Cumming has bought a flat in Edinburgh in order to enable him to vote in the independence referendum next year.

Cumming is presently ineligible to vote because he lives in New York, but the Polwarth property he has purchased for around £82,000 will ensure his right to back the Yes campaign at the ballot box.

The X-Men actor told the Sun: I don’t want to miss the opportunity to make an independent Scotland a reality. That’s why I’ve made sure I have a Scottish address again and am able to vote.”

Cumming, originally from Aberfeldy, is having the flat renovated after having purchased the property for £5,000 less than the asking price.

Alan Cumming has been a high-profile supporter of Scottish independence. He appeared alongside First Minister Alex Salmond and a host of other A-list names, including fellow Hollywood actor Brian Cox, as the Yes campaign was launched in May last year in Edinburgh’s Fountainpark complex.
