Obama hails 'defining moment in history' as McCain attacks opponent's tax policies

BARACK Obama urged Americans to look to the future last night as they make up their minds with just 10 days left in the race for the White House.
Back on the campaign trail in Nevada, following a two-day break to visit his gravely ill grandmother in Hawaii, Obama's campaign launched a two-minute TV advert which hailed a "defining moment in our history".

Without mentioning his Republican rival John McCain, who is trailing in most national polls, Obama highlighted the economic policies which led to his boost in the polls as the financial crisis engulfs the country.

The length of the advert, which will start airing in key states today, highlights Obama's fundraising superiority – most campaign commercials run for just 30 seconds or a minute.

The advert asks: "Will our country be better off four years from now?"

Obama says: "At this defining moment in our history, the question is not: 'Are you better off than you were four years ago?' We all know the answer to that."

The advert adds that the 47-year-old Illinois senator will work to end "mindless partisanship" and "divisiveness".

Obama leads by almost eight points in the latest average of polls by RealClearPolitics.com, but Obama campaign aides have urged caution and suggested that a wide margin in polls could lead to less Obama supporters voting on November 4.

Meanwhile, McCain repeated his attacks on Obama over taxes while again talking about Joe the Plumber, an Ohioan named Joe Wurzelbacher who has become the central thematic element in McCain's speeches.

"As he told Joe the Plumber back in Ohio, he wants to 'spread the wealth around'," McCain said of his Democratic rival.

The Republican National Committee also released a TV advert which questioned whether Obama has the experience to be president.

The advert, featuring the image of a stormy ocean, says the nation is in "uncertain times" that could get worse and asks whether voters want a president "who's untested at the helm".

But

as McCain's prospects dimmed, two Republicans openly took issue with the veteran senator's handling of the race in separate interviews.

"I would have done things differently the last few weeks," Representative Paul Ryan told a newspaper in his home state of Wisconsin.

And former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the race would have been different in his state if McCain had chosen him as running mate instead of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

But I hear McCain has listened to sermons for over 60 years from people who say Jesus didn't have a biological father. Should we doubt his ability to deal with problems rationally because of this.

Things seem desperate for the anti-Obama camp when none of the muck being spread relates to anything Obama himself did. His place of birth, his pastor, his political associates.

It may have escaped your attention that Powell is also a republican.

He is not the only person who told lies about WMD. Most of them are still in power in the whitehouse and should be locked up elsewhere, including McCain.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A federal judge has DISMISSED a lawsuit challenging Barack Obama's qualifications to be president.

U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick on Friday night rejected the suit by attorney Philip J. Berg, who alleged that Obama was not a U.S. citizen and therefore ineligible for the presidency. Berg claimed that Obama is either a citizen of his father's native Kenya or became a citizen of Indonesia after he moved there as a boy.

Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a Kenyan father. His parents divorced and his mother married an Indonesian man.

"Internet-fueled conspiracy theories question whether Obama is a "natural-born citizen" as required by the Constitution for a presidential candidate and whether he lost his citizenship while living abroad."

I saw the highlights of th last TV debate.

I was not impressed. The quality of teh answers and 'debate' were little better than my 6 year old squabbling with my 12 year old.

There was little or no depth to any of their analysis. It was supremely anodyne.

Tell me, Americans, is this because the electorate are incapable of grasping the 'complexities' of real debate, or is it a measure of the calibre of the candidates? Or is there another reason?

Re: a certificed birth certific... Obama has been heard to say that once he is elected he will produce the original certificate of birth. Re: what's on a birth certificate... Well, when I went for my US drivers license I filled in the blanks how I wanted my name to appear on my license. It appeared JUST EXACTLY as I had written it but guess what folks that's NOT how it is on my birth certificate. I actually applied to have my birth certificate changed so that my name on my birth certificate was how I wanted it to be NOT how it was as my birth. Now... having a valid US drivers licence I could get my passport and subsequent indefinite leave to remain visa with my name as I wanted it not how my birth certificate was. It's all true folks... Obama could have any name he wanted on his legal documents and all he had to do was apply for a change on his birth certificate.

Oh and btw... My Sister's neice has a hawaiian birth certificate and the embossed seal and signature is on the front as opposed to the back where Obama's aparently is (making it invisible on a photo copy). Are we absolutely sure Obama's is legit? Just in case anyone was interested.

What isn't generally known is that science shows it is is possible for it to have, or to happen, in the human species as well. You just have to get the right (rare) circumstances. If it's a reference to his "knowing" a former terrorist, so too has every President in modern times! Most Probation Officers know someone who's committed murder - does that say something extraordinarily bad about Probation Officers? Of course not. This kind of non-debate can only happen in the mighty US of A. Let's face it neither(or should I say,none of the four) are a great prospect and I don't think any have the credentials to be 'the most powerful man/woman in the world'. The more liberal among us want Obama, basically because he is coloured and because John Wayne McCain is a warmonger.I'm glad that we still adhere to a little bit of experience before giving anyone a modicom of power in Britain.However, briefly on that subject, people in this country look determined to shoot off one of their feet by voting, come election time, for the Etonian 'hooray Henry', pub wrecking and ultimately country wrecking crew who are lurking under the guise of the Tory party. Inexperienced or what? Anyway, I was trying to think of a goodish American president, in my lifetime, and, to be quite honest the name escapes me. Whoever is elected we, in the civilised world, will just have to wait for another four years with anticipation of what the totally screwed up, ignorant of world politics, totally, totally mad US will do next. Before they are inaugerated, the US president should be made to take a course in history, geography and certainly understanding what the rest of the world thinks of them.

You are correct in saying that no American president in the last 40 odd years has been an experienced statesman or even a good politician. Essentially, that country has always been run by big business and few Oval office "Petro Dollar" cronies.

There is however one thing that is very different this time round. America will not be a super power within the next four years. Now with McCain at the helm that will mean a world war, whereas Obama will probably try and avoid a world war - For that he may be removed!

In 1971 America printed far more money that it could back up with gold reserves - In 1975, the French demanded that her dollar cash money was redeemed in gold - in otherwords, here is all the dollars we have in France, please replace them with gold..America couldnt do so, because she had committed an act of bankruptcy - there was no way out, until the idea of the Petro Dollar came up. The Americans in a dire situation approached the Saudi's and cut a deal. The deal was arms and assistance against the Russian's and in return, all Saudi oil sold to other nations had to be transacted in US Dollars. In otherwords, no matter who you were, if you wanted oil, you first had to require US Dollars to pay for it.
This was a free lunch for America, her oil was now being delivered for free at the expense of the rest of the world.
But like all free rides, it had to come to an end and implode. Saddam Hussein, funny enough, was the man who began to tamper with the "Petro Dollar" free ride. Instead of adhering to the OPEC rule of dollar transactions, he decided to see oil to anyone who wanted it in EURO's..Thus OPEC and America had a problem - Saddam was the problem because his actions would bring America to her knees, for in essence America has been bankrupt for decades and survivng on a false economy, Saddam was about to bring her to her knees by selling oil in other currency.

Enter the Twin Towers and Osama Bin Laden - The whole world is in shock, we are told Bin Laden did it and that he will be caught, but before anyone had time to think, Bin Laden was forgotten about and Saddam was the target. (Bin Laden is still out there)
For the moment, the crisis was averted and the dollar was maintained has OPEC's currency for oil trade.
Then Hugo Chavez began selling oil in other currency. He was a CIA target - and the Petro Dollar scam was out the bag.
The Iranian president is currently selling oil in all currencies EXCEPT dollars, he must be stopped, no real surprise to see America looking for reasons to attack.
Now that other nations know they can buy oil in their own currencies they will have no need to hold US paper dollars and soon ALL OPEC nations will abandon the dollar.
The problem with that - America will soon be buying their own oil in Euro's or maybe Rubels - there is not enough dollars because most of them are false, the nation is bankrupt.
That means war - a world war - but will McCain or Obama be more inclined to fight that war?

The US Constitution says that anyone elected president [or VP] must be a "natural born" citizen. That means he or she must be born a citizen. It doesn't matter where one is born, just that he be a citizen from birth. One is a natural born citizen if he is born in the US or if he is born to a US citizen [anywhere in the world].

In fact, John McCain was born in Panama, not the US. BUT, because his parents were US citizens, he was at birth.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii... a US state. The rumor is that he was actually born in Kenya while his mother was visiting her husband's family. So what?? Even if he were born in Kenya.... his mother was still born in Kansas... she was still a US citizen... therefore Obama is a US citizen.

His father was a citizen of Kenya. No one has ever claimed that he was a US citizen. And... it doesn't matter! It makes no constitutional difference!

This is the level the poor Republicans have sunk to. They have no substance to argue. So they just make stuff up... or they state things with just enough spin to make you think that something is wrong or sinister.

I always thought that some "Southern nutter" would get him.
Oddly enough, through the week, I watched a film (movie) about F*nny Kemble,(you're not allowed to put an "a" in the lady's name - f***ing American software, only a girl's name in Scotland) the English actress who wrote about the plight of American slaves, and, turned it around considerably. It just highlighted the Christian versus humanitarian aspect that was around in these days. Fundamentalist Christians abound in the US(both parties)and adhering to what THEY think is in the bible. Players are the same and I don't know if attitudes have progressed.

If McCain wins I think the US deserve this for another 8 years although he will probably not see that long as he is so old and that will leave flighty Palin in charge. How can a 74 year old refer to change? If these 2 do get in it will be the continued US downfall as a Superpower but at a faster rate. I do actually believe that the average American is so stupid. When McCain refers to change you can hear the stuttery age within his intonation - frightening.

you are incorrect in your assertion. There were 2 big bailout bills recently. There was the housing bailout bill passed by the senate in august, by the house several months earlier and signed into law in late august. that bill authorized $5 trillion spending to bail out freddie mac & fannie mae. Both obama and mccain abstained from that vote. then there was the wall street bailout bill that got so much attention in late september. on that one both obama and mccain voted for it.

the anchorage daily news (most prominent newspaper of Alaska) endorses Obama.

you just don't know what you're talking about. Regarding the wall street bailout bill, where $700 billion was to go to wall street investment banks, that bill was voted on only once in the US Senate. both obama & mccain voted for it. it was voted on twice in the House.

what you read on the Indiana site must've referred to the earlier bailout bill, the $5 trillion bill for bailing out Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae, on that one both Obama & McCain did not vote.

Not one single democrat voted against it. and among republicans maybe 70% of them voted for it and some opposed and some not voting. McCain was one who did not vote.

I thought it was very curious that all the presidential candidates did not vote on that bill.

While doing an interview with a TV journalist in Florida, Joe Biden was asked questions he did not like, nor did the Obama campaign. They weren't softball questions, they were about the economy. Now, the Obama campaign is has decided that the other interviews on that station will be cancelled.
Does this mean, that when and IF Obama is elected and reporters are asking questions...you know like the hard ones involving economy, foreign affairs, and domestic affairs.. these two will decide NO..I don't want to answer this, and you are barred from the White House Press Room?
What is going on here? Every edited interview, trying to show the McCain-Palin interviews in a bad light has been shown over and over again, BUT THEY ANSWERED the questions.
Another Person (this time a station) thrown under the bus for retaliation and supression of the truth.

The one thing that I have noticed about this US presidential election, and for the first time I have ever witnessed, watching 'Question Time' and the great Andrew Neill shenanigan which goes out after 'Question Time', NO British politician wants to see McCain and especially Palin elected. Government ministers don't normally comment on US elections because we have to maintain "the special relationship". America has never been a friend to Britain despite all the rhetoric.
I liked the US isolationist period the best.

I went to the ABC Comments on the Charlie Gibson interview.. there are over 18,000 comments the last time I looked. If all those people who said they would never watch him again because of the rude, condescending way he conducted his interview with Gov. Palin, then Mr. Gibson's ratings are in trouble.
When 2 journalists were going to be interviewed on a TV station, the Obama campaign FLOODED the station with phone calls and e-mails to try and stop them.
Censorship now too? It's not bad enough that supression and punishment, and retaliation is the name of the game for the Obama Campaign.

regarding media censorship - regardless of who is elected the anti-trust legislation should be dusted off and used. The media should be broken up, forced to sell off many assets. There are only 6 corporations that own over 95% of US media. it is disrupting our ability to have a national discussion.

The rest of the media in the US is overwhelmingly liberal and refuse to do their job by asking tough questions from anyone with a (D) next to their name. Since 1913. . . the USA has had a system of "graduated / progressive" income taxation, with funds collected and paid out to states, municipalities, farmers, public works projects, educational and cultural facilities, roads, bridges, dams, Medicare, Medicaid,etc. etc.

This surely is not news to any of us.

"From each according to his ability . . to each according to his need" has been the operative phrase
for this system.

However, many of us shiver in our boots to remember who coined the phrase, assuming that this is necessarily an integral part of an over-all authoritarian system. It obviously functions in many environments, our own being one.

When you refer to the name "Karl Marx," consider the fact that you already live in a country which utilizes many of these Marxist ideas, within in a unique, capitalist framework.

It really doesn't make sense for ADN newspaper to endorse Obama, when the Alaksa state polls show McCain is ahead by 15 to 20 points.

it's a constant source of amazement to me, that newspapers, being in dire financial stress,are canceling their wire services, laying off people, cutting back on pages, etc. -but they can't figure out why nobody reads the paper?

But, it is a bad bad omen, and a sad day, when your own state doesn't heart you anymore.

As I've been saying, you really can't beat the good ole boys network, but Palian sure did give them a test.
