Lewis Ferguson reveals injury devastation as Scotland midfielder ruled out of Euro 2024

Bologna captain suffers cruciate ligament injury

Scotland midfielder Lewis Ferguson has spoken of his devastation after suffering a serious knee injury that has ruled him out of Euro 2024.

Bologna confirmed their captain had suffered cruciate ligament damage, an injury which is likely to keep him on the sidelines for the bulk if not all of the remainder of 2024. The 24-year-old went off injured during his side’s goalless draw with Monza on Sunday, which kept them in fourth place and on course for a Champions League spot.

A statement from the Serie A club read: “Lewis Ferguson today underwent a medical examination which revealed that he has sustained an injury to his cruciate ligament. He will undergo an operation, after which his recovery time will be assessed.”

The former Hamilton and Aberdeen player has been a crucial part of Bologna’s impressive season and had been linked with summer moves to the likes of Juventus and Napoli in recent months. Ferguson is yet to start a competitive game for his country and 10 of his 12 caps have been won from the bench, but his form had been putting him well in contention to feature heavily during this summer’s tournament in Germany.

"Devastated with today's news but that's life," Ferguson wrote on Instagram. "I will do everything to come back better and stronger than before. Thank you all for the support. See you soon."

Scotland also have an injury concern over Aaron Hickey with the Brentford full-back likely to miss the rest of the season. The 21-year-old, who emerged as Scotland’s first choice right wing-back during the Euro 2024 qualification campaign, has not featured for the Premier League club since suffering a hamstring injury in October.

Nathan Patterson has also emerged as an injury concern after limping out of Everton’s 6-0 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night in his first appearance for the club since January.

Grant Hanley is another facing a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the Euros. The Norwich centre-back has only been involved in nine games this campaign after a disrupted return from a serious Achilles injury which he sustained at the end of last season.

Scotland have two warm-up matches against Gibraltar on June 3 then Finland four days later before kicking off Euro 2024 against the hosts in the opening fixture in Munich on June 14. The Scots then face Switzerland in Cologne on June 19, with Hungary awaiting in Stuttgart on June 23.
