Hibs: David Stephens handed Welsh Under-21 call-up

Hibs kid David Stephens has been handed the chance for a bid for European glory after being called into the Welsh Under-21 squad for their final two qualifying matches against Hungary and Italy.

Although only 18, the 6ft 4in defender has already won his first cap at that level since making the move to Easter Road from Norwich City and is now poised to play his part as Bryan Flynn's squad push to clinch their place in the finals in Denmark next summer.

The young Welsh side have already beaten both Hungary and Italy to top Group Three with just these two matches remaining.

They now face Hungary, who they lead by a single point, in Szekesfehervar a week on Saturday before travelling to play Italy, who trail them by three points, in Pescara the following Tuesday.

Today Stephens, who made his debut for Hibs in the 3-2 win over Motherwell on the opening day of the season, admitted he was delighted at how his move to Edinburgh had been reflected in international recognition.

He said: "I think everything has gone really well so far at Hibs. I am still waiting for my chance to start in the first team but the manager seems to like what he has seen so far.

He told me he has been really impressed with me. I'm looking forward to the two European matches. I realise I might not play in either game but just to be involved is a massive honour. It has all come about quickly but I feel I have been working hard towards this and I see the call-up as being a reward for that hard work. Now I want to impress the Welsh Under-21 coaching staff as much as I can."
