WHAT a difference a manager makes. After winning their opening game against Motherwell and putting up a feisty display at Ibrox last week, Hearts showed that they are a renewed force this season with a display of guile and organisation against St Mir
ren.

As soon as the dam cracked when Jamie Mole's 45th-minute shot flew into the top corner, with St Mirren down to 10 men, it looked more a question of whether Hearts would win by a football score or a cricket score.

While Hearts struggled to convert their pressure into goals and could even have ended up drawing 2-2, for most of the afternoon there was only ever one side in this match, and it wasn't a St Mirren team whose sole attacking option seemed to be a vain hope that striker Billy Mehmet, the hardest working man in football, could escape the attentions of both the impressive Marius Zaliukas and Christophe Berra and latch onto a succession of aimless upfield punts.

But in truth this was all about a Hearts performance that provided genuine promise that the Gorgie side can reach for the top end of the league, the usual Romanov caveats notwithstanding.

For most of the game, Csaba Laszlo's side had a shape and a purpose that was clear and effective. Michael Stewart was the fulcrum, picking up the ball from deep and spraying it to the wings with an incisiveness that frequently threatened to carve St Mirren apart. They attacked down the right wing, putting the ball in behind Franco Miranda almost as often as St Mirren smacked the ball heavenwards towards Mehmet.

The only wonder was that for all their possession, Hearts couldn't create more clear-cut chances than the clutch carved out by Jamie Mole and Andrew Driver. With the exception of one early Mole shot which would have opened the scoring but for Will Haining's outstretched leg, Hearts' best chance came from a long-range shot from Laryea Kingston, which was well saved by Mark Howard.

Yet such was Hearts' domination in midfield, where rangy Ugandan debutante David Obua did enough to suggest that he will prove a shrewd acquisition, that the chances kept coming. Even then the tempo wasn't upbeat enough for a home crowd which could see the visitors were there for the taking. The volume from the stands ratcheted up after Tonet Guerao was dismissed after half an hour when he followed a silly early yellow card for a foul on Jason Thomson with an innocuous challenge on Stewart that brought a harsh second yellow.

The opening goal came from a moment of inspiration from Mole, who picked the ball up well outside the area and, taking one step, fired an unstoppable shot into the top-left corner with seconds remaining until the interval.

Instead of the floodgates opening after half-time, however, Hearts grew frustrated after the break as St Mirren shut up shop. Even worse, when Brown gave St Mirren a free-kick against the run of play for no apparent reason, the ball was moved quickly and, as Hearts' defence failed to react, the ball was whisked to the back post where Hamilton drew the 10-man visitors back on level terms.

Yet as Laszlo noted, this is a side that now plays with passion, and as soon as St Mirren drew level, Hearts went about their business with an urgency that had been lacking beforehand. Just seconds after Hamilton's goal the home side almost went ahead when Kingston's shot was smothered by Howard after the keeper had already parried Driver's shot. Then, minutes later, substitute Deividas Cesnauskis shot just wide.

The pressure was building and after Howard tipped a Driver shot over the bar, Hearts went ahead again when Miranda scythed down Driver in the box from the corner, Stewart converting the penalty.

Even then Hearts almost conspired to throw it away. With the match entering injury time and Hearts pressing, the ball broke to Audrius Ksanavicius in the box, only for Jack Ross to lunge in and give away a penalty. Stewart's shot was saved this time, however, and St Mirren broke, eventually winning a free-kick on the left-hand side with seconds left. As the ball came across, Mehmet rose unopposed at the near post, only to head inches wide with the last touch of the game.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Despite his penalty miss, Michael Stewart was outstanding, particularly in the first half, spraying the ball around with an accuracy that exposed St Mirren's defence time and time again.

QUICK FACT

Bruno Aguiar's favourite sport after football is roller hockey, which is "very big" in Portugal.

TALKING POINT

With no obvious contact around the box, was unimpressive referee Colin Brown trying to even up matters after sending off Tonet Guerao by awarding St Mirren the free-kick from which Jim Hamilton scored?

The goals will start to come. Remember this was a St.Mirren side which gave Celtic a hard time in Glasgow and ultimately only lost that match due to a "cheat" award.

Just so Richard Bath knows for the future, a tackle from behind is a yellow card offence. So nothing really harsh about it. Muppet.

Despite the change in players, managership, ownership(!!#*!) Hearts style has always been best when we've been a mobile fast unit, maybe not with the 'flair' of our Leith cousins, but when it works the direct back to front strategy can be exhilirating and this has been the continuous factor in any successful team we've had in the last 10 years.
When Hearts revolve around a midfielder willing to pick up the ball deep and spread the play thereafter we can be awesome.
Colin Cameron, Paul Hartley and now Mikey Stewart?

A game we might have lost last season. The right flank worries me though. The lad Thomson is pretty weak and I think we look a lot better with Chesney in the right midfield slot rather than play Driver out of position there. We need some more steel in this position and Karipidis would be a better bet with Ruben moving onto his midfield slot.

#7 i do not think Thomson has put a foot wrong this season.Agree Driver not as effective on right.Obua lacked sharpness(understandably) but his quality was there to see. Young Moles goal(a cracking strike) was a well deserved reward for a vastly improved player.M o t M was Stewart (again).

No chance of anyone outside Tynecastle commenting on the fact that only Zali (of Lith players) started(a deserved 1st choice) & the team contained 5 from our academy. Pat on the back VR for bringing in a manager that is proving to be an 'inspired' appointment.

Said before i would give Johnson a try there... can defend & pass.

...i would also try and sign Billy Mehmet...most underrated forward in SPL IMO.

Another 3 points - fair dos. Can Vlad keep his nose out, though? It'll be interesting to see but if 5 academy players fielded then bodes well for Csaba's autonomy.

Unless of course Vlad had turned his attention to punting these now. ;-)

You've probably got another couple of months form Stewart before his form trails off so enjoy it while it lasts.

He used to play for Man United you know.

Yeah and makalamity used to play for Chelsea. haha

5 acedemy players on the pitch yesterday, and another 3 on the bench, not many IF any teams can say that, and theres still others that have been in the squad recently, like McGowan, Husband, Templeton.

Also noticing new things like the new GK coach out training the GK's and puttng them through their paces that never happened before at Tynecastle because Banks was too busy either playing or in the squad.

All bodes well for the future, having so many young lads coming through the youth academy, even if only a couple of them reach full potential and turn out to be gems its still something, but all of them so far are learning still but they are doing good jobs.

Hard to say as he didnt have much to do, but i thought his distribution of the ball was good and he hardly punted it up the park, and anytime he did he was picking out players with it, think he commands the box well. Be interesting to see what he's like when tested more though.

Let's get a grip here....two great home results...but we won't get there till we can go to the Blue Filth and green slime in their own back yard and win....and we're MILES away from that at the moment. Every win is another step forward, but we have a long road still to travel yet.

Good day to pick up 3 points with the majority of the rest of the SPL all dropping them. Two winnable league games to come and the OF game guaranting lost points for one or both so the immediate future is looking bright. Not long to sign a decent stiker now though - could have been 4 or 5 yesterday with a real predator around.

#24 Didn't they just and the back page headline on the Mail on Sunday continues that theme with Wattie quoted as saying he hopes refs don't take it on Rangers. Maybe the 'clear the air' meetings have had some positive effects on the game up here :o)

It seems that Hearts would benefit from a decent striker but if Vlad is so rich why doesn't he splash the cash on someone decent up front, me thinks Vlad is cash strapped these days.

Anyway one striker that definately will never be joining Hearts is Derek Riordan as news is he has agreed to sign for Hibs, fee is £300k and its a 3 year deal, great news and I'm sure he'll put away many of the chances we have been missing lately. Roll on the next derby.

Good result for the JTs but I think we still need a strong leader at the back.I think Berra is a great prospect and is doing a good job but I just dont he is strong enough in holding the back line together at times. There was panic at the back in the second half and we could have lost 2 points right at the end just like the Well game when we got away with it.
We would be feeling different this morning if that had happend and it will happen if we dont get it sortted soon. Can you thing of one of the Old Firm teams needing a late goal and having that defending

Riorden taking a massive pay cut is he? he'll get less than half his current wages going back to Hibs, cant see it happening TBH, Petrie splashing 300k plus paying over the wage cap, how much unrest will that cause? is the unrest and problems it may create worth it for 1 player?

As for the comments about Vlad being cash strapped, considering he's worth more than double of farmer i hardly think he is in the cash strapped league. More like he is trying ti curb the debt and succeeding, 12million wiped off the debt just a few weeks ago, current debt level sitting approx 20million, not bad considerng we were 36million in debt. in the space of a few months the level of debt we have cleared is nearly the equivelant of what Hibs highest debt figure was.

Negatives first.....
Poor crowd - Did say that Vlad being in the "spotlight" again this week would dent the attendance as some I know used it as an excuse not to go.
When Mole scored - who else noticed that Larrye did not join in the celebrations - he was signalled at by a couple of players to come over and join in but he shrugged his shoulders and just wandered about , eventually Mickey went over and had a few words with him plus but his arm round his shoulder. Problems ? Hope not.
Stupid penalty kick of the season so far - Micky's first was fortunate to go in as the keeper dived over the weakly struck shot ,so surely the daftest thing to do would be to try the exact same type of execution for the secod attempt. Wrong - same as the first one and duly saved.Mehmet's missed sitter two minutes later could therefore have been costly.
Obua (though obviously has talent) stood 1 yard off the line and watched a chance in the first half pass by his feet without attempting to touch the ball - a sitter - cue clutching his head.
In the second half at the St Mirren goal he could have cleared the ball one yard off the line easily but just left it - cue clutching of the head again. No one could expect him to be on match pace though and he will need a few more games to get him to his best.
How many crosses did Andy Driver as usual actually "get across" ? Mostly blocked again.
The style yesterday is roughly the same style that the Angel tried last year - One that could work but I repeat again - only with a quality striker. It's definately frustrating at times as though in control we need to show urgency when the openings do appear - sideways passing is fine but only to exploit gaps and take them. Thats why there was a brief chorus of booing near the end as the frustration at the lack of forward movement set in (not from me by the way)
Those were the negatives.
There were FAR more positives...............

Somehow I don't believe the figures you quote on the debt reduction are true but don't really care, so if you are happy with it then cool.

#31 agree with all the negatives other than the effect of VR on crowd. bottom line is that we have lost 2500-300 season ticket holders. A large % of the them are 'fairweather' fans.(not critisising them).Plus recession WILL effect every team.
Noticed the Kingston incident but thought he was indicating injury as reason....hope so.

Bottom line is that we have come on leaps & bounds from last year.IMO we are firm favourites for 3rd but a good way off contemplating splitting the OF

Who said Vlads a great guy? business sense maybe but he's a grade a plonker when it comes to the team. So far though it looks like he is keeping his little sticky fingers out, if this continues then we will all be happy.

Riorden ill believe it when it actually happens, is there any news items on this? or is it just rumours started on hibs.net again? you think unsettling a whole team to accomodate 1 player is worth it? If Riorden goes back and Petries bursts the wage sturucture how long do you think it will be before the likes of Fletcher, Sheils, Murray and others are in Petries office demanding an increase or they want a transfer, thats before you even get to the animosity it will create on the pitch and dressing room.

Positives...................Cannot remember many games where we controlled a game so much until our self imposed semi panic mode deep into the game.

The score could have been MANY more goals in our favour - their goalies save from Driver in the second half was top class. We looked like if we really needed extra goals and been more direct - calculators would have been required. (were Hearts so in control or St Mirren bad - I reckon we were just greatly superior)

Zaliukas - though he still wanders (in body and mind) is winning a very large number of headers these days - as long as Mehmet is not barging into him.

Stewart was brilliant apart from a ten minute patch in the second half where his passing went back to last seasons efforts. Some of his first half balls were out the top drawer. Hell - If he goes on from where he is right now we have a real player.

Chesne looks on form - could do worse than considering to start him next week.

Saint Mirren BLATANTLY came for a draw and got exactly what they deserved.

What Hearts need to watch is that with this style of play , certain teams will not play us and sit back as much as yesterday - giving the time needed to knock the ball about. Same type of style but upped a notch of pace will be required - probably starting at Hamilton next Saurday.Reckon a sleeves up performance is reuired there though. Nothing to worry about - hopefully.

Yesterdays midfield six that played plus Miko,Jonsson,Palazuelos,Aguiar and maybe the Brazilian from Kaunos - EH sorry gents but that IS a strong midfield squad.Double cover for each position and all have something to give the team (Note the lack of Beslija - Don't think he actually wants to play football)

If Vlad keeps out of things third is there for the taking , simple as that.

I'm told the medical was completed on Friday and should be announced this week so it will happen. I believe that players should be payed in line with ability (just like any other business) and worth to the team, 20 goal a season strikers are worth their weight in gold, if Hearts could find one I'm sure they would pay them accordingly.

Im not disputing your last comment about players being paid in line with ability. I think the point your missing is Hibs have had a capped wage structure for a number of years now, this is in fact one of the reasons Riorden left you in the first place. If petrie is going to break this wage structure (Which i honestly cant see happening) then this is going to create a lot of problems. If there had never been a capped wage at Hibs then there wouldnt be a problem. You will have players like the ones i mentiones and others now demanding a wage increase and quite rightly so, if they're demands are not met then they will want away, this will create unrest between the players affecting your performances etc etc, Do i need to go on. We all saw the problems this creates when it happened to us when players were earning far more than others. you dont have the same harmony in the dressing room.

If a medical has already been carried out why wait until next week to announce the deal? Id have though announcing it yesterday before the game would have been a great time, a boost to the squad and fans. Sorry but this just isnt going to happen, just more rumour and speculation, I wouldnt be gettng too carried away with it, cause i think your in for a big let dodwn

The International caps criteria may not be fulfilled however as with Obua a case can be argued he would bring quality to the SPL and enhance Hearts as a team, after all who could argue he ripped Rangers apart. He is also in the EU which makes it easier to obtain a work permit when he is already living and working within a member state. And as already pointed out, there is always the possibbility of him gaining a Portuguese passport or another country if he is deemed suitable through parents/granparents to qualify for one.

I meant to add earlier Hibs lost out on Rab Douglas to dundee over £200 difference, this was the argument Mixu had with petrie a few weeks back Mixu wanted to pay douglas £1200 p/w Douglas was going to accept it, Petrie wouldnt pay more than £1000 a week. If Petrie isnt prepared to pay an extra £200p/w for a good goalkeeper which Hibs badly need, then what chance is there of him bursting the wage structure to sign ratboy?

We were immense yesterday. If we get Elliot back banging in the goals we'll be challenging for the league never mind splitting the OF.

#57 - p!ss off, sad sack.

You really must be exceptionally thick and have a very empty life if you're still getting excitement from pretending (badly) to be somebody else and spouting all the garbage you do. It's sad enough to do it once....

Weirdo.

#58 I am not this Serg character that you and your fellow boyfriends keep referring to me as. I have no idea why you think this? If it keeps you happy so be it. Hopefully none of you work for the filth as the number of cases of mistaken identity would result in numerous miscarriages of justice.

Roscoe P Coltrane,

#60 - what, like mistakenly identifying you as a sentient vertebrate?

Whether or not you're Serg, you're still a freak.

For your sake more than anybody else's, please get a life, discover $ex, drugs and rock & roll, whatever.

Or, and it's a fairly out-there suggestion, you could try supporting your own team? Outrageous, I know, but I'm sure you can do it if you really try.

Oh, by the way - loved your subtle gay humour there. Can't beat the cut & thrust of debate, eh?

#59 Idiot

When have I pretended to be anyone else? Never. It's just in your sad minds that you think this. It's obvious I'm not the other person, as I have all lower case letters. I copied my name from the link to the forum name that sometimes appears on Hearts stories.

If it makes you happy to call me a wierdo so be it. Just remember I am not the one who calls myself after a bungling sheriff from the Dukes of Hazard. Do you still play with the cars and have your posters of Daisy Duke on the wall? Better mind and no let yer ma catch you.

Grow up sonny

#62 "Can't beat the cut & thrust of debate, eh?"

Proceeded by your post in #57 "#57 - p!ss off, sad sack."

Surely even you can see the paradox?

Just remember now, last words are for fools who haven't said enough. Is that enough debate for you?

The Yams scrape past St. Mirren and all is well at Tynie.

Joke of a club and a joke of a set-up. You'll be lucky to get out of the bottom 6 with the squad you have.

How many loan players played yesterday?

Roscoe P Coltrane,

#64 - that's the way to do it - get paradox mixed up with irony. That's what happens when the mentally deficient try to use words with more than two syllables. I was trying to use language I thought you might have a chance of understanding.

So sorry that my choice of forum name doesn't meet your exacting standards, I'll try and do better next time.

Oh, and as for irony - "mind and no let yer ma catch you", "grow up sonny", "you and your fellow boyfriends". And, best of all, this is from somebody who posts very thinly-disguised digs at Hearts from a Hearts-related name.

Need I say more or have you said enough now?

#65 Celebrate wins and bemoan losses - all part of being a football fan. How many loan players did Hearts play? Four got a game. Don't you like loan signings - strange as your club ended up paying 1 million quid for a player we loaned for wages only. Who got the better deal there?

By the way if Hibs sign Riorden they can kiss goodbye any ideals of being a well run club (along with the flair and young talent myths). Getting rid of an entire team that's playing well - and losing two managers because of it - to save money and implement a wage structure, then blowing money and wages on one player is not a sign of a well-run club, rather one pandering to fan pressure. If Fletcher leaves because of it, and all the other players are jealous of the one guy in the team getting good money, I see more player revolts in the offing.

67 - ach, the poor wee soul hasn't even realised that Hearts have already "got out of the bottom 6", whereas Hibs are in, wait for it, 7th position in the table.

I bet he's got nothing against loaning, I don't know, say the new French forward they're all creaming themselves over?

64 Think the word you are searching for in your limited vocabulary is contradiction. Look up paradox in the dictionary (normally at the back of the English class or on the teacher's desk). And pray tell, why would you want to copy someone else's user name other than to childishly provoke people? Oh it's ok 'cos it's in lower case...

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 24/08/2008 19:37:14
Well done the Heart of Midlothian. We are really beginning to look like a football team and some of our movemenent off the ball and passing is really becoming pleasing on the eye. Only criticism would be that we still miss to many chances - Mole, Wallace, Nade & Stewart all guilty of really poor finishing which must be addressed if we are to kill teams off. Thought Obua looked a talent and will be an asset but both he and Thomson switched off for their goal and both were equally culpable.

On a separate note, when Hearts are keeping possession of the football when we are winning with 5 minutes to go, why do some phanny's boo when the ball goes back the way, even if it is to the keeper? You are not only embarrassing yourselves, you're lack of footballing knowledge will prevent decent players coming to our club - Absolute idiots of the highest order

#74 good honest post and i think you hit the nail on the head regarding the booing. Theres been a lot of negative opinions regarding thomson, I think he has great potential but lacks experience at this level. He could have done with another season at the academy though this is not his fault as it looks like he's had the position forced on him, due to the departure of tall, as hes the only cover available while robbies injured. Still he deserves a chance from us until robbies fit and i think the fans really have to get behind him and give him confidence. We saw what happened to elliot and it would be a shame if it happened to him. The positive thing is 3 games and 6pts, more than we probably expected due to recent form, and the guys are playing for their shirts again. A few more signings and i think we have the makings of a great force again.
Its great to be a jambo again!

They were booing because though our posession was top class - whenever an opening ocurred the oft used pass was sideways or backwards. Posession football comes into its own only when suddenly springing into life when an opportunity appears - using the newly found space - too many times yesterday we did not do this. If we can add incisive speed to our play watch out , as the ingredients are there for a good team. Mind you - most of us knew this - many of the players are decent - what was needed was coordination and good game plans.

Quite incredibly , the 4RSEHOLE that wrote about the Hearts game in the Daily Rioter made out that the Paisley bores (blatantly came for a 0-0 draw)deserved a result . All he comments about is St Mirren. I guess this chubby hack cannot have been best pleased when all he got to eat one day at Tynie was fruit and nuts rather than the usual fat journalistic buffet.
This man is supposed to be a professional at his job - What game was he at ?

Evening LF. i think the teams showing great signs of improvement under the new managment though its probably best not to get too carried away and go in to meltdown every time we lose! Im sure there will be a number of defeats throughout the season and the real measure is how we deal with it and bounce back. Weve hinted at this progress by beating st mirren yesterday, long may it continue!

Awright Smithy.
Paid a visit to Loftus Road yesterday so i missed our game but from the reports i have read and watching the highlights on Sultana it looks like it was a comfortable win that would have been a bit of score had we a decent striker or two.
Agreed though,we shouldnt be getting too far ahead of ourselves because "we are the hearts" & some sort of drama is usually just around the corner.

Surely Scotland on Sunday can find a real football reporter to cover SPL games at Tynecastle, preferably one who can accurately identify goal scorers and referees.
I understand that Richard Bath is an expert on rugby, particularly as played in England. I suggest he sticks to what he knows.

BigKennyMac,

A win is a win - no matter how ugly/unimpressive the football on show, so fair play to hearts.

I think they may well look back on this game at the end of the season, and see that it has turned out to be an SPL basement dogfight. These could well be the 3 points that help keep them up.

Big Kenny Bluenose
