Hearts 1 Kilmarnock 2: Hearts finally broken by Bryson

Published Date: 05 October 2008
KILMARNOCK have misfired lately after a fine start to the season, but got back on track and moved into third place in the Clydesdale Bank Premierleague with a narrow and late but deserved win over Hearts at Tynecastle. The visitors upped their work rate massively from last week's defeat at Inverness, while Hearts missed chances and gave the ball away too often.
There seemed little danger when Craig Bryson picked up the ball deep in the Hearts half in the 80th minute, but the Kilmarnock midfielder ran forcefully and played a one-two with substitute Donovan Simmonds before shooting low past Marian Kello to co
llect the three points. It was a sickener for Hearts, but the noisy contingent of visiting fans in the 13,100 crowd were ecstatic.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies paid Bryson a warm tribute after the match: "It reminded me of what Colin Cameron used to do here when I had him at Hearts, coming in late into the box and having the composure to finish." Bryson retorted: "That is some compliment," before revealing that during the week he had received one of Jefferies' persuasive chats – a rollicking, in other words.

Hard work is always Jefferies' top demand of his players, and he got it yesterday: "If we show the same application they have done this season – apart from the Inverness game – then we will contest the top six". They may go even higher as this is a developing young team with obvious potential.

The windy, chilly, and frequently rainy conditions gave a foretaste of winter ahead and also affected the match considerably. It took the players some time to adjust to the flight of the ball and the weight of numerous passes was awry in the conditions.

The weather may also have contributed to a flat atmosphere for periods of the game. Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo said afterwards his young team needs the supporters' backing, but it is legitimate to question if Hearts fans and players are not just getting a little downcast after the latest of many off-the-field fiascos at Tynecastle – "did the players enter by the unwaged concession gate?" as one joker put it.

Kilmarnock had the better of the opening exchanges, but Hearts soon found their stride and captain Christophe Berra headed a Laryea Kingston corner into the side net before Kingston, by far Heart's best attacking influence, placed a delightful cross in front of the in-rushing Mike Tullberg, making his first start and home debut. The big Dane was caught in two minds and the ball deflected wide off his midriff.

The opening goal by Kilmarnock was down to Jamie Mole's forward-style tackle on Bryson. He not only conceded a free-kick 25 yards out directly in front of his goal, but he was also booked and then watched Mehdi Taouil hit a ferocious curling free-kick over the wall and into the net, with Kello well beaten.

The goalscorer got himself a yellow card for a silly pull of Michael Stewart's shirt, and was joined in the book later by Simon Ford, David Fernandez, Manuel Pascali, Frazer Wright and David Lilley. The card count indicates, correctly, this was a competitive, physical encounter, but it was not an overly dirty one.

Hearts' equaliser had a touch of good luck, but it was deserved for their efforts in reply to the opener. A "route one" move ended with Stewart's shot cannoning off the defence straight to the unmarked Kingston who side-footed with slide-rule precision past Alan Combe into the bottom corner.

Scoring chances were practically non-existent until half-time, but Kilmarnock should have taken the lead early in the second period when a delightful lob from Fernandez put Conor Sammon clean through, only for Berra to get back and clear as the Irishman hesitated.

At the other end, Kingston nearly finished off a Jason Thomson cross in style, but the ball just cleared the bar. Kilmarnock captain Manuel Pascali tried to blunt Kingston's attacking threat and was booked for doing so after a fierce tackle in the 68th minute which put the little Ghanaian off for treatment.

Almost as soon as he returned, Kingston seemed set to score when he got free inside the box, but Alan Combe threw himself to block the shot. A long-range effort from Ford showed that Kilmarnock were still mighty dangerous, and so it proved when Bryson snatched the winner. Hearts tried hard for the equaliser and nearly snatched it deep in injury time when Kingston – who else? – headed narrowly past.

The home side now have a fortnight to pick themselves up before they face Hibs at Easter Road in what is a crucial derby even at this early stage of the season. Laszlo said he was "very angry" and disappointed at yesterday's display, saying his players gifted too many chances to their opponents.

Berra promised that the new players at Tynecastle would learn what the next match is all about in plenty of time: "They will get to know in the build up how big a game it is. There will be a lot of passionate fans and we have to show the same passion on the pitch."

MAN OF THE MATCH

He will no doubt rue missed chances and lost points, but Laryea Kingston returned to his best form yesterday.

QUICK FACT

In the programme, David Obua picked his Dream Team, with Maradona, Zidane and Ronaldo all featuring. His "dream" manager? Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo, making the article a certain entry in Private Eye magazine's Order of the Brown Nose column.

TALKING POINT

Jim Jefferies played mind games yesterday. He amazed Kilmarnock fans by making Manuel Pascali captain in Garry Hay's absence and admitted it was "psychological management" which gave Pascali "a wee spur" towards his impressive display.

As long as they talk about Rangers, and Rangers fans talk about Celtic, it's the Old Firm.

BAD MANAGEMENT cost HEARTS the game.Karipidas& Miko had poor games & offered nothing. Both should have been replaced at half time. Stewart was not much better with KINGSTON carrying the middle of the park on his own.MOLE should never have started. After a promising start to the season the boys head is down(largely due to being asked to catrry out a role he cannot do)net result was that he was a passenger(again).NADE should have partnered Tullberg who looked OK.
Bringing on Sammy(not kicked a ball all season) & the waste of space Mackela consolidated what IMO was inept management.

POSITIVES: Kello was very good again(commands box/distribution good & an excellent double save).
KINGSTON was back to his old form.
However DERBY coming up. The morons like #7 will have their post match party arranged & with the right team we can .once again, play the role of 'partypoopers'.

Hearts leave third place. I think Hearts need Thomas Buffel or Libor Sionko. They fail Rangers. but They better Jamie Mole and Audrius Kšanavicius.

Kilmarnock is good. I hope Donovan Simmonds sign, If he can more score and assist. I think Peter Thompson out is big bad for Kille, Allan Russell will return, but Kille need more striker

Went to Ireland to see Edinburgh get beat then back to see Hearts do similar. Should have stayed over in retrospect, watching a team with an inept strikeforce is not satisfying.

I was slated a couple of moinths ago for saying the unknown Csaba was no Messiah no matter how well he spoke (at length) and should see where results, the only truth, get us, others now perhaps coming round to this point of view. 4.4.1.1.???

What a miserable performance this was yesterday.
For reasons known only to those in the "inner circle", Hearts starting eleven includes the following deadbeats
Zaliukas; Mikoliunas; Wallace; Mole.
In fairness to Wallace he told all the world his confidence and form were very low, but Csaba played him anyway!!!(mental)
Add to that the lad Karipidis flaffing about in midfield, when all of us (pretty much) felt happy with him beside Berra in the heart of the defence.
Laszlo then baffles everyone in the ground by taking of a striker (we're at home remember) and replacing him with one of the poorest players at Tynie..."Audrey", who then proceeded to play like a woman.
Laszlo is not in complete control of team affairs!
If he is, he's a plank.
With sub standard players like those mentioned, games like the Killie one, will be the norm.
Three defeats in the last four games, and it ain't over yet.
Hibs and Celtic on the horizon...oh dear.

#12 correct you are a moron ...son!
FFS you are a point above HEARTS after beating the team 11th in the SPL . Anyone with a brain would wait until after the Derby before shooting their mouth off.

SCORCHIO: agree 99%. You are watching a different Zali from me. He has been every bit as good as Berra.
Thought Lee Wallace played better yesterday butagree should have been dropped.

However important we stay behind the team. With players returning from injury/hopefully Driver/Obua to follow & the inclusion of Glen (communications poor from Tynie;is he injured/out foor how long?) a lot more options for CSABA. As long as be uses them as time to bin the Kari is a midfielde notion & get Palaz/Aguier back in the side.

Not wanting to cause any controversy, but yesterday I went up to the Lothian region transport offices at Waverly Bridge to renew my bus pass. Derek Riordon was in the queue right behind me. I said Hi Derek what brings you in here.
He said that Hibs had given him £53.00 up front to get a bus pass and were prepared to pay the £35.00 a month standing order payments.
Only condition was that he was to keep it all quiet in case any of the other Hibs players found out and went radge.
He said they had even given him money for a day saver ticket just so he could get there.
They asked him to stand against a wall to get his photograph taken.
A few minutes later a lassie came through from the back office and said Derek we need a photo of you and not your pet Rat. Derek said that is me ya cheeky bint.
I said never mind them mate, I will take you for a pint but he said he only drinks buckfast in the house nowadays. And said something about saying to bouncers “do you know who I am” not sure what he was on about there.
Said he will now only venture into a pub when hibs win the Scottish cup. He then said do you know anyone who supplies buckfast by the train load.

Cheer up, boys. There may be a positive in all of this.

Early results have merely papered over the cracks. Laszlo appears to have lost the confidence of the players and there is a feeling of that lack of leadership that was evident last season.

Of course, the real problem is Romanov. I think it's time for Romanov to sell up and move on.

His lack of concern for the team and the fans is unacceptable.

Defeats in the next couple of games may prompt some action from Romanov. And who knows? It may also swell the ranks of the "wrist-slitters"...

Thats a perceptive comment.
The honeymoon is over and no matter how well the manager might try Romanov and his mates are working to another agenda.

There is turmoil coming and I fear for Hearts and their fans.

Sometimes a new manager can turn medicre players into "dervishes". Levein has done it at Dundee Utd and JJ manages to do reasonably well with few resources at his disposal.
Hearts supporters hoped that Laszlo could work a mimi miracle with some of our guys. He hasn't.
I think we've seen enough of the players I listed, given them more than enough "final try's", and it's just a fact of life, that they are not up to SPL standard.
My main fear surrounds Romanovs intentions now.
Once upon a time he had ambition for the club, now he's a stranger in Edinburgh.
Once we had a team with four or five "winners" in it. Guys who would not acce[pt defeat, and anyone on the park who "swung the lead", got it tight.
An overhaul is required. That starts at the top...Over to you Vlad.

Bleeding Heart...,

A quote from Laszlo yesterday...

"Last season I think Tynecastle was full nearly every week. At the moment we don't have so many supporters here but we want to have them all back. For this we need success. We need to give something back."

Yes, you and your players DO need to "give something back". What is stopping you?

And while you're at it Shabby, tell this to Romanov...

Scorchio; in my opinion we could and should be performing better with the players we have.CSABA is picking the wrong side.Iam also having difficulty understanding his use of the reserve team.surely NADE should play 90 mins for them(as opposed to not featuring at all).Palaz also not involved yet Mackela gets 90 mins, looks worse than useless & gets a place on the bench.
I share your fear re VR but hopefully his obvious lack of interest combined with current global economy issues might catalyst him selling the club.Realise a tall order as not many people out there with a spare £30m or so.

However if Csaba utelises Palaz/Glen/Aguier/Driver/obua when all fit then i still believe we have the 3rd best squad in Scotland.

##a wee derby win and suddenly it will all look different. Far from a 'tall order'

At last fans are waking up to the harsh reality that Romanov is a disaster for our club. No one really knows what Romanov's agenda is but whatever it is, it has nothing to do with developing Hearts as a genuine force in Scottish football.

Csaba is a decent man but sadly he is proving to be another puppet manager. He clearly stated when he was appointed that he liked his teams to play a 4-4-2 system but we continue to use Romanov's ineffective 4-4-1-1 system.

Hearts will never be successful while Romanov is the owner because he just sees it as a way of making money for himself, selling players on at a profit with the funds going straight into his bank account.

It is time to consider organising a boycott of a home match to finally show that Hearts fans are prepared to fight to save our club.

Think it's still pretty early days to be judging laszlo. Levein and JJ have tonnes more experience and ken the spl inside out. we were utter rubbish last season and it's pretty much the same players, could take some time to sort out.
Also agree with 17 n 19 that vlad has lost interest and probably has much more pressing concerns just now with the banking turmoil. where this leads us...?

I can't see Laszlo having the bottle to drop all of the Lithuanian lads.
I don't understand why Mole gets a start every week.
I don't go with this Eggy becoming the best right back in Scotland in two years time.
I don't like Karipidis in midfield.
I don't rate Zaliukas at all.
The Polish guy did well at Falkirk and he wasn't even on the bench Saturday.
Wallace needs a rest, some time to get his head sorted.
The guys you mention, don't set my pulse racing I'm sorry to say.
But one things for sure, Driver is light years ahead of Miko when played on the left side.
Glen is better than Mole, or was!
Bruno was never consistent... might he now?
Ruben is far too defensive for me.
Right now though, our keeper, Thomson, Mikey Stewart, Larry, Berra, and Tullberg are the guys who should keep their places.
For me I'd have Karipidis beside Berra.
Obua and the Polish lad can't be any worse than the rest.
Big changes for the Hibs game?
I doubt that very much. Miko will play, Zaliukas will start, and Audrey will be involved somewhere.
We will play one up.
We will get cuffed.

Ghenkis: no one 'waking up' vast majority well aware that VR has lost interest a long time ago.
Although no one could rule out VR interfering by dicatating team shape i think the fact that we have had only one fit/viable forward has had more to do with same.Started yesterday with mole & Tullberg.

CSABA has to stand up & be counted & use the players who are there/on form & there will be no need for talk of boycotts...we have the players to get 3rd place. Transfer window...offload Nade/Mackela(if pos!) & sign Billy Mehmet from St Mirren.

I can't believe Csaba doesn't see what is obvious to everyone: wrong players, wrong formation and overpaid duds. No full backs, zero up front and lack of spark in midfield. Stewart is visibly frustrated by lack midfield ability. We just can't hold the ball! Palazuelos must be absolutely dumbfounded not to be playing: I nearly walked out when they brought on Audrey yesterday; he is an utter waste of space. Csaba must use January window to get rid of a team e.g 1 goalie, Wallace, Miko, Chesny, Kingston, Audrey, Beslisa, Makela, Nade, Mole(loan), Neilson;and bring in four/five top quality payers 2/3 mid + 2 strikers. Rapik lb and Karipidis/Jonsson rb?? We have talented young guys (Copil, Kostadinov, Glen etc)who could slot into a stronger side.
If Csaba's picking the team he's making a pig's ear of it. I fear for what'll happen in the Derby if no change. We're losing fans by the bucketload and no atmosphere at Tynie these days.Given the wage bill we are underachieving to the greatest extent I've seen to the point where I might send back my ST in protest!

Was disappointed in yesterday's performance although it was good to see Larry back at his best - a wee bit of luck and he could've had a hat trick.

Thought Killie look the more organised though and in true JJ style they put themselves about a bit. If the JTs had a crime count of over half their team booked I'm sure it would have made headlines but just another day at the office for Killie.

Whatever happened to Gordon Smith's campaign to fight this stuff and to root out the racist bigots?

What happened to the "good guys" in the media who are supposed to be against the stuff? What did they say about it today?

It's sad but I think the decent scottish people are just going to accept this sort of scum running about our society. If Alex Salmond had any cahunas he'd get the lot of them jailed. But sadly him and many others just don't have the bottle to stand up for what's right. Instead they just sweep it under the carpet as if it is a minority.
