CHRISTOPHER ROUSE
Symphony No 2, Phaethon
****
Telarc CD-80452, £8.99
The American composer Christopher Rouse was in the late stages of writing Phaethon when the Challenger space shuttle exploded in January 1986, coincidentally at the point in his music where Zeus' thunderbolt knocks the would-be god Phaethon from the sky. Dedicated to the seven astronauts, it's fitting that the world première recording of this work should be by Christoph Eschenbach and the Houston Symphony. Their performance is strongly felt, coping well with Rouse's complex music. This is an album of exciting music, excitingly played.
