GANDALF MURPHY AND THE SLAMBOVIAN CIRCUS OF DREAMS
The Great Unravel

High Noon Records SR0008, £12.99
There are four in the independent collective, but no Gandalf, or Murphy. Slambovia may be a state of mind, but the music deserves to be heard. Woodstock-era psychedelia, folksy hillbilly roots, classic Americana and a sly humour come together in big, life-affirming songs from a unique band. Clever, tight musicianship – on basic guitars and drums with cello, mandolin, accordion, flute, harmonica and guest uilleann pipes – allied to a sponge-like absorption of music from any decade of the last century, produces a hybrid that will appeal to anyone of any age. And they don't, as their name suggests, take themselves too seriously.
