Cardiff ready to test Rangers' resolve with increased offer for prolific striker Boyd

Published Date: 22 June 2008
CARDIFF City are preparing to table a fresh bid for Rangers striker Kris Boyd.
The Ibrox club confirmed on Friday they had rejected an offer for the 24-year-old, widely reported to be in the region of £2.5m, from the Coca-Cola Championship side.

However, Rangers are likely to find their resolve tested again, with City chairman Peter Ridsdale revealing the FA Cup finalists are willing to step up their attempts to secure their target.

He declined to identify Boyd but confirmed: "We are prepared to increase our offer on a player for whom we have already submitted a bid."

Despite an impressive goalscoring return since his £400,000 transfer from Kilmarnock in January 2006, Boyd has yet to earn a regular place in Walter Smith's line-up.

He faces increased competition next season following the capture of three new strikers in the shape of Kenny Miller, Andrius Velicka and Kyle Lafferty.

A move to Ninian Park could allow him to spearhead Dave Jones' attack and provide the opportunity to demonstrate his ability to perform at a high level south of the Border.

But Ridsdale warned that Cardiff would not be held to ransom in the pursuit of a player who this week reiterated his desire to remain at Ibrox and fight for his place.

He added: "It all depends on the right price at the right level. We know our price and we have other options."

Meanwhile, veteran defender David Weir is set to sign a new one-year deal with Rangers next week.

The 38-year-old held talks with Smith on Thursday after returning from holiday. His agent Dave Lockwood said: "It is very likely that Davie will sign with Rangers for another season."

Rangers are also reportedly on the trail of £2.5m-rated Czech defender Marek Suchy. The Ibrox club are keen on the 20-year-old Slavia Prague player, according to press reports in the Czech Republic.

Suchy can play in central defence or move into midfield and was voted Most Promising Player last year by UEFA after starring in the Under-20 World Cup. He is under contract until 2010 and Slavia know they can cash in on their player if they sell him this summer.

Everton were strongly linked with the player in January, but the move failed to materialise.

This is yesterday's speculation - or the day before's. Reports in other papers say Walter Smith has told Boyd he wants him to stay.

The only way that WS can get another decent season out of Weir and Dailly is if he alternates them, so that they get plenty of rest and neither of them plays more than 30 games this coming season.

I still think that we should pursue young Reynolds of Motherwell, perhaps even adding Alan Gow to our previous offer, as McGhee is thought to be an admirer. Young Suchy does sound promising though, although at 6' in his studs, he's not the tallest for a central defender.

Didn't Boydie turn down a move to Cardiff from Killie when someone informed him the city was in Wales?

Never mind Boyd - I'm delighted to see Weir staying on for another season.

Boyd will stay.

It's all part of the WS tactics. Make players realise that the chance to play for Rangers is an honour, and something to be fought for.

#6 That for words you numpty.

Being realistic, if he can score 25 goals after spending most of the season on the bench, imagine what he could do if he was to start. I suspect that will be Uncle Walts plan now he's bought Miller.

Miller will provide all the knock downs and flicks for Boyd. Could be a 30+ season for him next year.

Besides, as much as it pains me to say it, #6 is right. Thompson has not really set the heather alight down in Wales. It would be detrimental to Boyd's Scotland career.

If Boyd had a bit of pace, his partnership with Miller would work.
But Miller races into wide positions, and Boyd will not be there to take a cross...he'll be lumbering forward somewhere between the 18 yard box and the half way line, and by the time he gets up, Miller will have either lost possession or be forced to play the ball back along the flank to broadfoot or Papac.

To take advantage of Miller's abilities, you need a striker with pace almost as good as his.

I dont know what will happen with Boyd, but I tell you one thing, if he went to Celtic they would win the league at a canter.
Celtic for their lack of league titles versus Rangers have always had one thing Rangers have never had, and that is an ability to recognise a players strenghts and then allow that player to fulfil their potential.

Kris Boyd would score 45 goals plus at Celtic and then he would in the radar of EVERY premiership side. Kris Boyd at Celtic would be a prolific scorer...

#13 - "ability to recognise a players strenghts and then allow that player to fulfil their potential"

Derek O'Riordan may disagree

Boyd for his undoubted goalscoring ability is limited in other areas and at times is akin to a passenger - Smith aint stupid and this is why he's not automatic first choice. I also think Boyds' in danger of believing his own hype in that all he has to do is score and hee haw else.

Riordan is one of few, generally speaking Celtic allow players like Boyd to flourish.

I agree that Smith isnt daft, but I disagree about Boyd being limited in other areas, because he doesnt need to be in other areas, he needs to be standing waiting to score goals, something he does with ease.

At Celtic, the team would be built around Boyd, not the other way around...And once that is done, there wont be a game that he wont score..Boyd does what teams need most,he scores goals and he scores them often. SO his name should be first on the team sheet and the other players should be scrapping for a place to provide him with the best service...

Boyd at Celtic would be devastatingly good...

#16 - other than McDonald (who Smith tried to buy) who are the Celtic players that have been allowed to flourish. Hartlley & Robson only came into at latter half of season when Brown got himself suspended and Strachan unfortunately realised Donut was mince!

I watch Boyd practically every week and when he doesn't score he's like a man down -Rangers are not Arsenal and don't create bucketloads of chances. I agree a player like Boyd would be effective in a team like the latter (Arsenal doesn't equal Celtic) but despite his goal record he does have to contribute more. I also think his lack of regular action led to poor fitness (which is a double edged sword). He and Miller would have potential as i always liked him for Scotland. Velicka as backup is good - really not sure about Lafferty at all - where does he plan to play him - £3 mill for backup/potential is risky

The thing is, Rangers dont need to be Arsenal in the SPL...Boyd should be in the team and the players around him should be providing the effort and the work rate to feed him..And in the SPL that should be easy.

I would love to see Boyd at Celtic, he would score for fun...

It looks like we'll have to agree to disagree then. Even MCCoist in his pomp worked very hard for the team. According to reports up here Boyd looks like he'll start with Miller, certainly in home games, and if his fitness gets up he'll unquestionably score plenty.

As an aside just back from Germiston in Jo'Burg - genuinely scary. I go each year and it just gets progressively worse. God knows how Fifa can expect the World Cup to be played there - public transport is a death sentence and famous taxis with superstrength rear axles are a joke.

Never fear though - Zuma and his magic showers will sort it!

Germiston! Yikes, the East Rand is considered the FAR EAST...It has always been dodgy even in the good old safe days! You dinny want to be going there again mate, Germiston is the Wester Hailles of Jhb or the Drumchappel of Glasgow. lol

Zuma, what a farce eh!

Anyway, I understand your views on Boyd, I just like a goal scorer and I feel that they should always be first on the team sheet..

Keyboard supporter, How did you manage to watch Boyd every week when he did not play every week?

In today inflated English market, I would hope Rangers would get at least £5 million for Boyd. Anything less and he would not be worth selling.

Cardiff's offer for Boyd is far too low....
especially if the price is on a per pound basis...
Boyd has years of experience and has sat on the bench at International and European level. However, he should not be allowed to sit near the ends for H&S reasons....

Most of the punters can see the deficiencies in Boyds game, but he is paid to put the ball in the net, his goals to matches ratio is second to none.

Clubs pay for goal scores hence the interest from clubs in Boyds transfer.
