Zoo reveals it put down piglets 'surplus to species'

Two red river hog piglets at a Scottish zoo have been put down because of a "surplus of the species".

Edinburgh Zoo animals Sammi and Becca were put down at the age of five months on the recommendation of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

Animal activists criticised the move and said alternative homes should have been found for the hogs.

A zoo spokeswoman said "It is our policy to respect and be guided by recommendations made by the EEP."
