Letter: Hopeless signs

I HAD occasion to visit my local recycling depot on the outskirts of Pittenweem, Fife, recently.

The road leading to the depot had a large "Road Closed" sign but no indication whether the closure was before or after the depot.

Continuing my journey, I met a steady stream of traffic coming in the opposite direction and reached the depot without any problem.

A 15-minute call to Fife Council's road defects number elicited the response that roadworks are planned in March or that the closure may have been related to flooding.

Meantime, I was advised, motorists should observe these "Road Closed" signs and the situation would be investigated.

This is typical of councils' increasing tendency to erect road warning signs and leave them in place long after the emergency is over.
