Body recovered from car which plunged into Fife dock

A man's body has been recovered from a dock after the stolen van he was driving plunged into the water, police said today.

The vehicle went into the water in Methil, Fife, yesterday afternoon.

It is believed police were trailing the van at the time of the incident.

The man, a 44-year-old, was driving a stolen yellow pick-up truck. His body was found inside the vehicle.

Fife Constabulary said a review of the circumstances leading up to the incident would be carried out by another force.

Police said the van had been reported stolen from near the Forth Road Bridge.

It was spotted by officers near South Street in Methil.

Central Scotland Police divers were sent to the docks last night to search the water.

The van was recovered from the water at around 1.30am today.

Superintendent John Pow said: "Central Scotland Police, who have assisted in the recovery of the man's body and the vehicle, have also been invited to review the circumstances of police involvement prior to the vehicle entering the water at Dock 3.

"Witnesses have identified themselves to the police in relation to this enquiry and I would issue a further appeal for people to come forward that may assist

Police said his identity is not being released until next of kin have been informed.
