Published Date: 16 March 2008
THEY were hailed as Tynecastle's answer to Gheorghe Hagi and Hristo Stoichkov, but things haven't gone exactly to plan for Dumitru Copil and Branimir Kostadinov in Edinburgh and both could be on their way out of Hearts.
Having arrived in Gorgie 12 and 18 months ago from Romania and Bulgaria respectively, the youngsters were reckoned to be among the most talented of their generation. Copil, in fact, was even named among the top 50 prospects in Europe by respected mag
azine, World Soccer.

However, the precocious teenager has walked out on Hearts and returned to Romania after taking umbrage at being substituted during Hearts' recent Youth Cup defeat by Rangers.

Kostadinov, meanwhile, has spent the past week on trial at Manchester City, a club who rejected the opportunity to sign him as a 15-year-old. Now 19, the former LASK Linz left-sided midfielder or striker travelled south after being recommended to the English Premier League club by his father, Petio, a licensed agent who has recently taken control of his son's transfer affairs. Despite never having featured for the Hearts first team, Kostadinov believes his son is already destined for bigger and better things. "Petio thinks his son is a world-beater," said one onlooker.

Kostadinov Snr, moreover, is known to be a close associate of Anatoly Korobochka, Hearts' sport director; Korobochka gave his blessing to the Manchester City trial despite the fact that John Murray, Hearts' youth academy director, and Darren Murray, the Under-19 coach, have no desire to see the player leave the club.

Copil's case is more intriguing. Known to be from a particularly poor family in the Romanian town of Arad, Hearts paid ?200,000 for the right-sided midfielder's services, after beating off interest from Celtic. Like Kostadinov, he has failed to trouble even the first-team substitutes' bench this season but Copil has cut a disconsolate figure in recent times, making it clear to those around him that he is unhappy with life in Scotland.

Now back in his homeland, Hearts have informed the player that he has been fined for leaving without permission. There is no suggestion that Copil plans to rejoin the Tynecastle club in the near future.

Copil is understood to have returned from a Christmas break in his homeland with an injury, sustained while playing football with friends. He was escorted back to Scotland after the holiday period and subsequently home within the last fortnight by his mother, Florica, who cannot remain in this country for longer than three months because of work permit regulations.

Hearts retain a five-year contract option on Copil, but even if that deal is not invoked by the club, they will be entitled to compensation for the player should he look to move elsewhere. Speculation in his homeland has linked him with a move to Steaua Bucharest, who along with Celtic, had courted him before he joined Hearts. Those close to Hearts, however, have stressed that the club have done everything possible to allow Copil to settle in Scotland.

"John Murray and Hearts could not have done more for Copil," said a source close to the player, who added that the academy director has gone so far as to buy a laptop computer and boots for the youngster from his own pocket. "He is regarded as the most talented kid at the club, he has been lifted and laid and wanted for nothing, but he has thrown all Hearts' help back in their face."

Both Copil and Kostadinov joined the full squad for pre-season in Germany last year but went back to general apprentice duties on their return, such as cleaning the boots of senior players, which is understood to have riled the Romanian.

Amid such discord, the chances of Hearts' supporters seeing two players – whose arrival in the capital was much heralded – turning out in maroon are growing ever-more remote.

Like rats leaving a sinking ship, or should I say Submarine, dive, dive, no not on the park lads you do that naturally, just a metaphor for the state the club is in and sinking fast. Down down deeper and down.

It's more complicated than Hearts not measuring up, or whatever.
Too often these lads, have an opinion of their ability, that's not matched with reality.
Big ego's, no longer the only "fish in the pond".
That said, maybe it's better all round to move them on, they have no feel for the club after all.

Having watched both players on numerous occasions - I am not sure what the fuss is. Neither look better than average.

McGowan and Glen - now they are going to be big players for Hearts.

Hobo Harry - my 5 year old wants to come round and show you a picture of him holding the Scottish Cup.

I am sure you could 'dig up' a relative of yours to replicate his gesture.

Bin the two precocious little sh1ts now... if they are acting up like this when they are young inexperienced little nobodys... what will they be like in a few years time?!

Another Pinilla?!

All the 'great' players started at the bottom and learnt their trade cleaning the boots of others. If they think they are better than the club... release them back to the euro slums where they came from and take their boots and laptops back!

#5&6 - Is this the best you jambos can do? Every day the same old crap about 106, 107 years or whatever.Should you not be more concerned with the exodus from your club. These players were supposed to be the foundation for a great future for the jambos - European Cups etc. What have we got now? - desperate jambos looking for Gretna to fold so that Hearts can pick up default points to try and catch Hibs in the league - Sad really but true.

#9 Yup bored of jambos thinking their club is better than it is. As many have mentioned in the past the league table doesn't lie. Frail now thinks Europe might just be out of reach!! Get real Europe has been out of reach for most of season with this teams displays. Some clown was on here the other day suggesting Hearts would take maximum points from their last four games before the split, where did that come from?
11

Mibo,

16/03/2008 10:30:35
#11 Yes, lost all these players and still good enough to compete at top end of the table. What's your excuse for the Hearts position? Also we have another batch of players coming through whereas you are telling me you have perhaps two or three.Looks like you might have to buy big to compete with the smaller team next season. Vlad is the best signing Hearts have ever made, hope his reign continues if current standard is to be the norm.

#14 Resorting to insults now are we? Suppoted my team for over 45 years and yes can remember all too well when Hibs dominated Hearts for years including a Scottish Cup win (2-1) at Tynecastle when Arthur Duncan famously ripped up Davy Clunie for a**e paper. In those days we expected two points as standard and most times got them. Unless you are at least same age I have probably seen my team win more recognised domestic trophy's than you. Hardly a parasite. Will accept your forthcoming apology.

"from what i have heard, hearts would be best served by exploring the easiest, quickest and most financially expedient route to get these two chancers and their parasite families out of the club for good."

To be honest that is a bit harsh. What we have here is a non-story about a few lads who did not settle. Young lads, different cultures, ect it's hardly surprising. This happens all over football.

What it does highlight is that clubs need to nurture talent closer to home and not get caught up in hyped frenzy of grabbing the next Maradonna, Messi ect.

It's bad enough having agents punting over-rated foreign journeymen to clubs without treating young undeveoped talent as a commodity. It's not good for the young players or the clubs.

Celtc supporters spokesman was on the radio and said that they may boycott the Gretna match to reduce their income and hasten their closure, meaning Rangers get points deducted.

TGFITW, full of the milk of human kindness want to actively speed every Gretna employee out of work and onto the dole. These are human beings we're talking about, they have families and financial responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Brother Walfrid spins in his grave in shame.

I'm sure if I could actually be ersed to look and count the number of times YOUR tag appears on Hibs stories, it would considerably outnumber the times mine appears on Hearts stories VI. So you can stick your mock indignation where the sun don't shine....Why DO we post here anyway, I often see you asking....Car Crash Rubber-necking Syndrome would be my guess.

ps I am aware that your post was probably an attempt at humour, much needed in the dark hours ahead of you, so I magnanimously forgive you

#23 No name does not bother me in the slightest. I have known many Hearts supporters, particularly school mates from yesteryear of that persuasion so that fuelled the reason for question. As for gloating and parasite, I was hardly gloating more commenting that several Hearts fans now seem intent on reminding Hibs fans of woeful historical and ongoing Scottish Cup record than concentrating on their own teams demise which is happening now.

Hearts have good youngstars. Andrew Driver, Eggert Jónsson, Matthew Park, Rocco Visconte, David Templeton, Matthew Doherty, Denis McLaughlin, Cairan Coll, Matej Rapnik, Ryan McGowan, Gary Glen, Elias Wagner,Jason Thomson and Others..

Branimir Kostadinov and Dumitru Copil is more special talented Players..I hope Hearts clear Two stars Situation and give chance First team. Hearts no chance Uefa cup and Intertoto cup.

#19 leith keely, Err, did you read my post? I never mentioned the player leaving. I questioned why a BIG club like Hearts would make their star players buy their own boots. Or why the staff of said BIG club would have to pay for them from their own pocket.

I take it the chump called "FFF" means the same with his F's as I have over the last few years.
OOps - forgot - He copied my "FFF"s , stupidly thinking they were meant complimentary wise about the Micks.

Worrying that a Hearts coach actually buys boots and a laptop for a projected star player from his own pocket.
If you are coveting a "starlet" - these items would be seen as staple requirements.

Young kids away from home and not progressing at the rate that they expect.

The pressure that they are experiencing being the meal ticket for an extended family is probably a big contributory factor in their desire to move quicker than their current stage of development allows. We have seen the same from Scottish kids over the years. Remember, we had McFadden before he went to Motherwell but he did not have the maturity to handle the pressure at that stage of his development and was let go.

These two are without doubt outstanding prospects but no more than that at this time. The Australian kids look the part so does Gary Glen. These guys want to be here. Look what happened with Elias Wagner at Hibs, pleaded homesick and weeks later signs for us. It is happening everywhere with young talent remember what happened with Daniel Galbraith who we sold to Man Utd after they had unsettled him. He is still in their reserve side and would have been a first team player by this stage if he had stayed at Hearts and kept fit. Our principle must be if players are not happy at HMFC (either junior or senior) and if we can get money for them we take it.

Look at Arsenal, their team is filled with young talent recruited from abroad and developed by Wenger, however there is no mention of the near 30 other young players they have signed over the last 5 years who have not made it and have returned to their home country with their talent enhanced but not quite to Premiership standard.

I have said before that the purpose of the academy is to produce 3 players of international standard every two years. I think that to date we have achieved this with Berra, Jonsson and had he been Scottish Andrew Driver. There will be ups and downs as youngsters come and go. As always there will be pressures on individuals for a variety of reasons and this has to be worked through.

The fact that other teams are interested is a credit to the staff at the Academy. Keep up the good work

It's a bit rich for Hibbies to accuse Hearts supporters of exaggerating the capabilities of their team. I've been a Jambo for over half a century and I've lost count of the times some deluded Hibernator has assured me that his team were on the cusp of wonderful achievements. The latest guff was all about 'flair' and the exciting young manager who was going to lead them to greatness.
The manager lasted about as long as it took to discover that flair and panache are useless without good old fashioned guts and commitment.
