SCOTT Arfield's late winner, a sumptuous strike from 18 yards after Steve Lovell had set him up, suggested the Hearts revival is yet another false dawn but the afternoon truly belonged to Neil McCann.
There are those who believe there is room for sentiment in professional sport. These people are also of the opinion that the moon is made of green cheese and do not doubt the existence of the Tooth Fairy. Needless to say, McCann is not included among their number.

The former Scotland winger had two spells at Tynecastle, the first markedly more successful than the second, and has never attempted to hide his affection for the Jambos. Nevertheless, that did not prevent him from drawing first blood against Csaba Laszlo's side yesterday nor celebrating his goal as though it had been scored in a World Cup final.

It came with a large dollop of fortune, although the injury-plagued McCann may have reasoned that he was overdue some of that. Certainly, Graham Barrett's cutback from the right would never have found him if it hadn't been inadvertently deflected into his path by Christophe Berra. McCann, though, still had work to do but he dispatched an angled drive behind Marian Kello with élan.

His joy was understandable: his previous goal had come for Southampton at Northampton four years ago and the last time he scored in the SPL was in February, 2003, for Rangers at Dunfermline. "I was surprised to start after being out for five weeks with a hamstring injury," he said. "The manager had told me to gamble by running into the pocket and I took that chance because you can sometimes catch defenders out that early in the game.

"When the ball went in I was just ecstatic. It was quite special and not because it was against my old club because I still have a lot of love for Hearts. I was just delighted for the management, the team and the backroom staff that we got the win after the disappointing start we'd had."

The setback briefly galvanised the visitors, however, and Laryea Kingston's firm shot from the edge of the penalty area forced a fine save from Robert Olejnik low to his left.

Polish midfielder Adrianj Mrowiec, making his debut, should have restored parity midway through the first half but somehow managed to pull his shot wide from six yards.

Referee Craig Thomson annoyed both sets of supporters with his decision-making, which is usually the sign of a decent performance. But Tam Scobbie could have few complaints about the caution he received and Saulius Mikoliunas deserved the yellow card he was shown for his late challenge on Olejnik.

Mrowiec's cross from the by-line seemed destined to be buried at the far post by Jamie Mole until Darren Barr produced an outstanding defensive header to nick the ball away.

Michael Higdon had his name taken for chopping down Michael Stewart and, in truth, the second 45 minutes was notable more for its physical aspect than any flowing football.

Stewart's goal, a piledriver from 25 yards, came from a free-kick awarded after Kevin McBride had been booked for pulling the Scotland midfielder down. Marius Zaliukas, previously cautioned, was lucky not to see red for a late lunge at Lee Bullen but Arfield guaranteed that justice was done.

The Hearts manager, Csaba Laszlo, refused to be too downbeat. "We lost three points but not our pride," he said. "Our fans were not angry with us because they saw us play good football. You can't win every game but we will keep trying."

His opposite number, John Hughes, made no attempt to disguise his satisfaction at the way in which his charges had grafted for the points.

"I've seen us play better football but I couldn't fault the players for their commitment, effort, character and spirit," he said. "We've always been a working-class, boiler-suit club, perhaps because Brockville was such a dilapidated old ground but we should never forget those values just because we have a new stadium."

We gve away points to last years bottom of table club Gretna.

Let's not blame referees, let's blame the lack of strikers and cover for injured strikers we all said were required for last 6 months if not longer.

HEARTS were poor in 1st half. Wallace once again responsible for goal(3rd this season).Someone must tell him how to mark a wide man/work on his speed over 5 yds or we will loose goals continually.
Miko annonynomous on left(did not contra to report deserve booking/ball was there to be won).
Changes should have been made at half time not 5 or so minutes in.After changes HEARTS dominated with NADE in particular playing well.(stonewall penalty denied)

Dissapointed to see Mackela on the bench but not Glen.Mole was once again asked to do a job he cannot do but this was his,by far, poorest game.

Karipidas was awfull/gave the ball away too often.Kingston poor.Palaz should be playing.

Reserves on Tuesday for me to see what options up front/left back or we will continue to loose games we should win.

Fantastic reporting as usual from this table. The "ref", for want of a better description, was Steve Conroy. He must have done well when both sets of fans were singing "You're not fit to referee".

Apologies for the typo. That should say "stable". Must send in a job application to Holyrood Road tomorrow as I'm obviously qualified to write for these jokers!

Cannae defend.
Passable midfield.
Nothing up front.

Will be a right shame that.

Was talking to a motherwell supporting pal last night on the phone .

He was telling me McGhee was very upset at half time with the Celtic's backroom staff up the tunnel. He was apparently seething at Celtic back tracking on an agreement .

No one knows what that agreement was but my mate reckons it was to do with letting Celtic win the game.
McGhee wanted it to look like a close encounter . Celtic to scrape a 1-0 win or something but when Celtic went 4-0 up with in the first half McGhee was not to best pleased and accused Celtic of taking the p*ss out of him and making him look like a s**t manager.

It only calmed down when Strachen took McGhee aside and had a quiet word with him.

And what happens . Motherwell score 2 goals without reply in the second half . Saving McGhee's blushess..

Well thats what my mate said anyway..........

"Our fans were not angry with us..." says Laszlo!

Well, in my view the fans should be angry. YOU should be angry about this result, Mr.Laszlo! It's just not acceptable that you should become so aerated about Obua having to pay for his own air fares, yet display such nonchalance about yesterday's result.

As #2 says, "let's blame the lack of strikers and cover for injured strikers we all said were required for last 6 months if not longer."

But we all know who holds responsibility for failing to sign the players necessary for Hearts to challenge for trophies.

The fans obviously want to see a successful, winning, Hearts team.

It's clear from Romanov's refusal to invest serious money in the team that he has a different agenda from the fans.

Romanov's appointment of Laszlo is Romanov doing what he felt was necessary to placate the fans. But it's only a sticking plaster.

Romanov needs to match the ambition of the fans or explain why he can't/won't do this. Or maybe I'm mis-judging Hearts fans? Maybe they're content to accept second-best so long as Hearts manage to beat Hibs more often than not..?

Very disappointed to lose yesterday. When Nade and Ksanavicius came on, there was only one team in it.

Kingston cannot play as a second striker, he was anonymous until we moved him out right. I'd start with Nade and Ksanavicius up front in the next match.

The referee was absolutely appalling, as usual.

#7 TOTT on the same points as you..... 8 or 9 obvious jambos above you(not sure about the other names) & your 'bum boy' punT!T near the bottom.....

celtic outclass Motherwell(top six team last season);took foot of the case to save legs for Euro tie.
Current Buns struggled against Killie(despite having JJ as manager still bottom six last season). Once again needing refs help with penalty & despite the fact NO EURO game to worry about.

League winners as predictable as your posts. Gers in the pack to be the best of the rest.

BTO...how come i got another point? I got another 6 points to add to last weeks two.

Not so bright as only got 3 out of six results correct but bailed out by Fletcher scoring 1st.

However just like SPL it is a marathon not a sprint.

seems like this is the only place I can comment on the footie. Celtic look to be getting into their stride. Too many of our players have still been celebrating the previous championship in the first few weeks of the season. Even in the SPL you can't get away with that.
18

Richardinho,

14/09/2008 17:11:07
Yes, if you want to scrape by teams like Killie at home with the help of a dodgy penalty, you have to be prepared to spend millions of pounds more than them!

the reality of the situation is that hearts lost this game, tough sh** for us.

the reality of all things hearts is that there is always an incredible gnashing of teeth when we lose and a normal reaction when we win. teams like hearts are in the second echelon of team who can challenge for the european places, they will all lose lots of games.

the usual wrist slitters (who don't go to a ANY games) will be pumping the gums about another defeat obviously. they are far from eager to air their views when hearts win.

we will win plenty of games this season. we will lose quite a few as well. some people who call themselves hearts fans will care more about the games we lose.

#38 VI I DIDNT go to the game but by all reports we should have got at least point and perhaps if a couple of decisions by an incompetent ref(for both sides by the way) had gone our way then perhaps we could have squeaked full points.
Not at all disheartened and cant wait for the next game to see the boys getting it right.
Agree we are definitely in the second string of teams with a chance of 3rd place.
Sent you a pm mate.

It was a clear cut penalty, unlike the poor decisions that have come the tics way, and helped them get points, in the early season. Killie the last time I looked had the same amount of points as the tic.

34 thepundit

You are starting to soumd like Idee repeating the same thing over and over. "diddy teams"

As a Gers supporter I prefer to see a stronger SPL and clubs like the HMFC, HFC, MFC, AFC, etc, providing a stronger challange to the OF clubs.

#38/39 LF, you are certainly not among the usual group of reactionary, knee-jerkers who start roaming the streets of gorgie / newcastle with 'the end of the world is nigh' placards.

that game will not be the last game we will lose against so-called lesser teams. that is a simple fact / prediction.

hearts are ill prepared to go away to teams like falkirk and expect to win, another fact.

we must all live with that.

The refereeing was no different at the start of the season than it was this week, but because a few decisions went against rangers, the media decided there was some kind of huge crisis. This week when rangers benefit from a decision, there's no crisis. funny that.

United are sinking like a stone. I predicted that this would happen a few weeks ago after they obviously used up half a season's energy against us. Exactly the same has happened to St Mirren. By contrast, I expect Motherwell to do well in the next few games.

Not really, it's classic diddy team mentality to wear themselves out trying to prove they can 'match' the champions. Not much good if you lose your next 3 games mind.
Just like Rangers over the top diddy type celebrations after the last OF game.
48

Richardinho,

14/09/2008 21:10:27
Rangers celebrated like diddies after the OF result. Buns that I know were telling me that they'd virtually won the league after that-I've had a smile on my face all week about that.

A lot of buns will be having nightmares about Nakamura for years to come. What a player he's been. Funny how all the skillful players seem to end up at Celtic. It's hard to think of any player of genuine quality playing for Rangers in recent times. Maybe that's why we're champions.

The only fans who say anything about Broadfoot's ability are the tic supporters.

Pele he is not, he knows it, the supporters know it, what he is is a hard working pro trying to improve his game as a fullback (he is a centre half, remember Caldwell and his problems at fullback))

He also did his best for Scotland during the week scoring on his debut and putting us on course for 3 points. He is also looking quicker now that McGeady is out of his back pocket.
