MAJOR retailers in Glasgow, including John Lewis and House of Fraser, have teamed up to launch the Christmas Wrapped Up campaign to beat the credit crunch by attracting shoppers.
Shops in the city will also vote on Friday whether to give the go-ahead to Glasgow's Style Mile. This would see the "Golden Z", which runs along Argyle Street, up Buchanan Street to Sauchiehall Street, being rebranded the Style Mile.

The aim is to
generate more revenue from customers. The project to launch the Style Mile Business Improvement District is being led by retailers and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, supported by Glasgow City Council.

Christmas Wrapped Up is a £250,000 campaign developed by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and a number of retailers, including Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre, Princes Square and Debenhams. The aim is to increase trade for shops, restaurants and entertainment venues over the festive period. It is being launched as analysts predict the worst Christmas for retailers in 30 years.

The marketing drive includes a website listing gift ideas, extended store opening times, transport initiatives and special offers from restaurants and hotels.

Lesley Ballantyne, managing director of John Lewis in Glasgow, said: "Retailers are working together to use the money from the campaign to buy more advertising and remind customers just how great it is to shop in Glasgow and how much is going on."

Ballantyne, who is also chairwoman of Glasgow's Style Mile, said an announcement will be made on November 24 about whether the campaign will go ahead, following the vote.

If it gets the thumbs-up, retailers will pay slightly higher rates to contribute towards the project, which will be worth £4m over five years.

Susan Nicol, general manager of St Enoch Centre, said: "It's a tough market but I think the initiative will get the go-ahead."

Its objectives would include increasing footfall by targeted marketing of the city centre, improving the shopping and leisure experience for local customers and tourists and easing access to the city centre. The world's only other Style Mile is in Sydney, Australia.
