RYAN ADAMS & THE CARDINALS

Cardinology

****

Mercury Records 1789279, £12.99
After the gimmickry of releasing three full length albums in 2005, Adams is back with his most consistent collection of tunes to date. From the offbeat spiritualism of the opening 'Born Into A Light' to the melancholy 'After The Goldrush'-like echo of the closing 'Stop', Adams does not miss a beat. 'Fix It' is the song Bono is still struggling to write, and the wonderful flatulent riff of 'Magick' is a lovely slab of grebo garage rock. The Cardinals provide a sterling setting for his talent, and Neil Young and Willie Nelson inform the tough and tender vocal inflections.
